PIM and packaging complexity across sectors

Products you buy online and offline almost always come in specific packaging. PIM systems make it much easier to provide packaging information. The complexity of that information depends heavily on the specific sector in which the product is offered.

The complexity of packaging information

The packaging of products depends on the nature of the product, (local) regulations, and consumer needs. MDM and PIM make managing this type of information much easier for several reasons.

By centralizing product data, you increase the reliability of that data. This also applies to packaging information. Specifications, dimensions, materials used, properties, and other relevant info are collected and managed in one location, making it clear to all parties at a glance.

PIM and MDM play a crucial role in defining and maintaining standardized packaging information. It makes it easier to categorize packaging data. Plus, it contributes to data quality. This is useful for all external stakeholders. They can rely on the accuracy and completeness of the packaging information, while operational efficiency within your company gets a boost.

Packaging complexity by sector

Different sectors use different types of packaging. Each sector also has specific legislation. The common thread is that packaging must provide for the safety, health, and information needs of the consumer. We explain the differences in packaging using the following three sectors: the food, technology, and plant sectors.

Packaging in the food industry

The food sector is strictly regulated. Packaging must comply with strict legislation on food safety and labeling. It must provide detailed information about – among other things – nutritional values, allergens, ingredients, and expiration dates.

At the same time, there are strict requirements regarding the packaging material used: it must not react with the food it comes into contact with. Additionally, food packaging plays a crucial role in protecting and preserving products longer. For example, there are vacuum packs for fresh meat and airtight packaging for snack products.

Packaging in the plant sector

The plant sector is also strictly regulated in terms of packaging. Plants are living organisms. As such, they are susceptible to diseases, pests, and invasive species. To prevent the spread of such pests, strict phytosanitary packaging rules apply. These apply to plants, but also to seeds, for example.

Packaging materials vary greatly depending on the type of product you offer. Fresh products like flowers require breathable materials, while seeds and bulbs are packaged in airtight containers. Whatever packaging you use, there are strict certification rules in the plant sector. All necessary certifications can be easily managed when working with a PIM system.

Packaging in the technology sector

The advantage of packaging in the technology sector is that you are not dealing with perishable products. Therefore, the regulations are somewhat less strict, but other specific rules apply. For example, the packaging must comply with legislation regarding safety, environment, and consumer protection.

Additionally, the technology sector has some specific challenges. The packaging must protect the products from shocks and damage, but also from static electricity. Plus, many aspects, such as compatibility with other devices and safety instructions, must be clearly displayed on the label.

Clearly present packaging information with PIM

You can easily manage the complexity of packaging information in a PIM or MDM solution. All information is centrally available, making it easy to retrieve or enrich that data. Additionally, it offers many automation possibilities, such as importing supplier data.
